Abstract

The sustainability of Baitul Maal wat Tamwil (BMT), an Islamic microfinance institution, depends on its human resources' ability to translate Sharia principles into operational practices that generate public benefit (maslahah). This study maps employees' knowledge of the five pillars of Maqasid al-Shariah (al-dharuriyyat al-khamsah), identifies how these pillars are reflected in BMT products and operations, and formulates a Maqasid-based competency framework to strengthen the institution. The study used a sequential mixed-methods design at BMT Sumber Barokah Asahan, North Sumatra. We collected data through a 1–5 Likert questionnaire administered to all employees (N = 30), in-depth interviews with four informants, non-participant observation, and document analysis. We analyzed quantitative data descriptively and qualitative data using Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña's interactive model. Employees' conceptual knowledge was good to very good: 27 of 30 respondents (90.0%) fell within the dominant 4–5 scale for the indicators of hifz ad-din, hifz al-‘aql, and hifz al-mal. A gap emerged at the applied level: the indicators on the relevance of organizational social policy (hifz an-nasl) and on the ability to explain Maqasid in simple terms reached only 70.0% on the dominant 3–4 scale. Institutionally, Maqasid is reflected in integrating the Baitul Tamwil and Baitul Maal functions. The study proposes a Maqasid-based competency framework and Maqasid-based key performance indicators that require further validation.
